Moonee Valley Racecourse
The Moonee Valley Racecourse (also referred to as The Valley), is the historic home of one of Australia's most prestigious horse races, the W.S. Cox Plate. It's considered one of Melbourne's most appealing spectator racecourse, offering an exciting, up-close and personal entertainment experience like no other. Established in 1883, Moonee Valley has enjoyed a rich and vibrant history of thoroughbred horse racing at its unique amphitheatre track and was the first Australian metropolitan track to conduct night racing.
Moonee Valley Racing Club is committed to maintaining high standards of excellence in racing and customer service. Each race meeting offers premium racing, entertainment and enjoyment throughout the year and during the Spring Racing Carnival. Our aim is to engage and excite our members and visitors about day and night racing at Moonee Valley. The record attendance at the Valley is 50,670 for the 1960 Cox Plate while the largest attendance for a night meeting is 32,342 on opening night in 1998. These days, the maximum capacity is around 25,000 at the venue, reduced in recent years due to sections of the hill being blocked off to make way for a residential development.
There is a masterplan to completely redevelop The Valley to transform it into a world-class multi-sport venue and the world’s best night racing venue. It'll feature a spectacular new grandstand, re-oriented racetrack and redeveloped infield activated for community and major event use. Some of the existing land will be developed to help fund the project.
