The Wests Tigers and the Liverpool Council have reportedly met with the NSW Government in the hope of securing funding for a new stadium, with a view of it becoming their permanent home.

The NRL club recently announced it would split 10 of its 12 home games for the 2024 season between its two spiritual homes – Leichhardt Oval and Cambelltown Sports Stadium, however its long-term home appears less certain.

Located at the junction of the Hume Highway and Remembrance Avenue, the Liverpool site is the location of the proposed Oasis precinct which incorporated a stadium for the Bulldogs and indoor arena, floated by Canterbury Leagues Club, who still own the site.

It is claimed the site is worth $40-50 million and would comprise 3,000 new apartments – a mix of private, public housing and build-to-rent – developed by the Holman Barnes Group if approved.

Wests Tigers hopes the revenue gained from the housing development would offset the majority of the cost of the proposed 20,000-seat stadium, a redeveloped aquatic centre, new aged care facility and a conference centre.

Cost estimates indicate that the Minns Government would only have to contribute $100 million if they gave the green light.

It’s believed A-League club Macarthur Bulls, who are currently based at Campbelltown Stadium, were also approached to play games at a new Liverpool Stadium but are yet to formalise their position.

The Tigers already have plans in place with Inner West Council and Campbelltown City Council to upgrade their two existing home grounds at Leichhardt Oval and Campbelltown, and it’s unclear how those plans would be affected if the Liverpool project proceeded.
