Wollongong’s entertainment centre could finally be in line for a much-needed upgrade, after the NSW Government announced they’ll provide funding for a business case.

The multi-purpose indoor arena opened in 1998 but following a couple of incidents in recent years, the venue has been crying out for an upgrade, with a report two years ago suggesting the centre is not fit for purpose.

In February 2020, a leak in the roof forced the abandonment of a NBL match between the Hawks and Breakers. Venue staff worked for close to 40 minutes to fix the issue but weren't able to plug the source of the leak during the heavy rain.

Then in March 2021, a backboard collapsed during the pre-game warm-up prior to a televised NBL game at the venue.

Performers have also commented that the dressing room facilities at WIN Entertainment Centre aren’t up to standard.

In Tuesday's budget, the government's Enterprise, Investment and Trade Cluster included a funding commitment of $3.5 million ($4.5 million recurrent expenses over two years) to develop a detailed business case and master plan for the Illawarra Sports and Entertainment Precinct.

As well as the WIN Entertainment Centre, the precinct also includes WIN Stadium and the adjacent training field.

Wollongong MP Paul Scully welcomed the funding to work on a business plan for the precinct, but says it is years too late.

Earlier this year, an ambitious $500 million Business Illawarra proposal was revealed for the precinct, featuring a revamped stadium, new entertainment centre and integrated hotel.

As part of the vision, a 20-storey hotel is envisaged for the rest park area between the entertainment centre and the beach, while the training field would become public space suitable for outdoor concerts.

The existing WIN Entertainment Centre would be demolished and rebuilt, along with the northern and southern stands at WIN Stadium.
