Engie Stadium has received a multi-million-dollar lighting upgrade to be unveiled at Saturday’s AFL match between the GWS Giants and Western Bulldogs.

In an exciting advancement to the Sydney Olympic Park venue, the 24,000-seat Engie Stadium now features state-of-the-art LED lights exclusively designed for sporting venues.

The $4 million LED lighting upgrade gives the main arena at the Sydney Showgrounds the same capabilities as other major Australian stadiums including the Adelaide Oval, Suncorp Stadium and Optus Stadium.

The upgrade will significantly elevate Engie Stadium’s lighting capabilities and enhance the match-day experience for fans attending the venue, while also cutting the Stadium’s power consumption by half on game days.

Compliant with AFL and International Cricket Council requirements, the advanced new lighting system will also have the functionality to support world-class light shows for concerts and music festivals, including the Sydney Royal Easter Show held at the venue each year.

The spectacular lighting enhancements will be unveiled for the first time on Saturday as the GWS Giants host the Western Bulldogs, and also be on show in the Giants’ remaining five home games at the venue this season.

Giants CEO David Matthews said the upgrade would provide a world-class experience for fans attending Giants matches.

“This upgrade is very exciting for the Giants as it will only further enhance the amazing match-day experience we already offer at Engie Stadium,” Mr Matthews said.

“We can’t wait for fans to come along on Saturday to watch us take on the Bulldogs and enjoy what we know is a first-class experience for our fans.

The project was directly funded by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW, which runs the Sydney Olympic Park venue.

Sydney Showground General Manager, Darryl Jeffrey, said the upgrade would see the venue thrive among its peers well into the future.

“We are super excited about this upgrade and believe the investment in a state-of-the art lighting system is a great step forward for our business and the longevity of the stadium,” Mr. Jeffrey said.

“As a venue, we have proven our versatility in hosting a range of events from festivals and sporting matches to live stadium shows, and we believe this innovative technology will take our venue’s offerings to the next level, ensuring it can remain competitive against the brand-new stadiums built over the last few years.

“Having recently launched our own Environmental, Social and Governance strategy, this lighting upgrade is also a direct investment into the sustainability of our venue, with the new LED lighting boasting a life expectancy of 25 times that of the current system and set to reduce running costs by up to 47 per cent.”
