Final designs revealed for Leichhardt Oval upgrade
The final designs for the long-awaited redevelopment of Leichhardt Oval have officially unveiled, with work to commence following the 2026 season.
The plans promise to deliver modern facilities for players and spectators, securing the iconic suburban ground's role as a key sporting hub for decades to come.
At the heart of the $40 million upgrade is a major overhaul of the historic Western Grandstand. The redevelopment will introduce four new female-friendly changerooms, built to meet full NRL standards, ensuring the ground is fit to support the continued growth of women’s sport.
The grandstand will also receive new stadium seating throughout, alongside upgraded hospitality, corporate, and media facilities designed to enhance the spectator experience.
The entire lower seating bowl around the field will be replaced with modern stadium seating, and a new 1500-seat Northern Grandstand will be constructed, adding to the ground’s capacity and comfort.
Together, these improvements will elevate Leichhardt Oval to contemporary standards while preserving its cherished character.
The final plans show the stadium seating in the Wests Tigers' colours of black, white and orange, who'll continue to play NRL matches at the venue thanks to the upgrade.
Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne welcomed the release of the final designs, highlighting the balance between preserving the Oval’s unique atmosphere and upgrading its infrastructure.
“These plans respect the heritage and spirit of Leichhardt Oval while ensuring the facilities meet modern expectations for players, fans, and local sports clubs,” Byrne said.
“This will make the ‘eighth wonder of the world’ one of the best suburban grounds in Australia and enhance the electric atmosphere that makes it so special.”

The upgrade has been made possible through a funding partnership between all levels of government, with the Commonwealth contributing $20 million and both the NSW Government and Inner West Council providing $10 million each.
Federal Member for Sydney Tanya Plibersek described the redevelopment as vital for the community and the future of the ground.
“Leichhardt Oval deserves world-class facilities to match the passion of its fans,” Plibersek said.
“Whether it’s hosting professional matches, school events, or women’s and girls’ competitions, this redevelopment will ensure the Oval remains a vibrant community hub.”
The final designs were developed by project managers Ernst & Young and Cox Architects, renowned for their work on stadium renovations and major sporting infrastructure.
Construction is scheduled to begin following the conclusion of the 2026 winter sports season, with the Wests Tigers slated to return to the new-look venue ahead of the 2028 NRL season.
Once complete, the upgraded Leichhardt Oval will offer not only improved facilities for professional teams including the Wests Tigers, but also a permanent home for women’s sport, helping to foster the next generation of athletes in the Inner West and beyond.
