M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, commonly known as Chepauk Stadium, is one of India’s oldest and most iconic cricket grounds. Located in the heart of Chennai, the venue has been a centrepiece of Indian cricket since opening in 1916 and is regarded as one of the country’s most historic sporting venues. Named after former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president M. A. Chidambaram, the stadium is owned and operated by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association and has hosted international cricket for more than nine decades.
The stadium is the home ground of the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League and Tamil Nadu’s domestic cricket teams. It has staged numerous memorable Test matches, One Day Internationals, Twenty20 Internationals, IPL finals, and ICC tournament fixtures, including matches during the 1987, 1996, and 2011 Cricket World Cups. Chepauk is renowned for its knowledgeable and passionate crowds and has earned a reputation as one of the world’s great cricket venues.
Between 2009 and 2023, the stadium underwent extensive redevelopment, replacing much of the original infrastructure with modern grandstands, upgraded hospitality facilities, improved player amenities, enhanced media facilities, and increased accessibility while preserving the venue’s rich heritage. The ground is also recognised for traditionally offering spin-friendly pitches that have produced many memorable international performances.
In 2026, M. A. Chidambaram Stadium was announced as the host venue for the opening match of the Australian Big Bash League season, becoming the first overseas venue to stage an official BBL match. The historic fixture between the Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers marked a significant milestone in the competition’s expansion.
