New SCG Stand approaching first big test
The new Noble/Bradman Grandstand isn't complete but all seats will be in use for the 5th Ashes Test commencing on Friday as Australia looks for a 5-0 whitewash over England.
The latest redevelopment at the famous Sydney venue seems to have taken an eternity, with work commencing around the same time as the massive Adelaide Oval redevelopment got underway. The work completed at each venue is there for all to see with Adelaide Oval well advanced.
Demolition of the old Noble/Bradman Stand got underway around April 2012 while construction started around November.
Workers are putting in long shifts in a mad scramble to get the $200 million facility ready for Friday's 5th Ashes Test Match between Australia and England.
While all seats will be in action, SCG officials have admitted sheeting on up to one-third of the 40-tonne roof won't be in place, leaving spectators in the open if it rains.
''I can't see it being finished,'' said Rodney Cavalier, the chairman of the SCG Trust.
Mr Cavalier said two months of heavy wind stopped cranes from working and delayed the roof installation.
Despite the delays, the SCG insists the redevelopment is running to schedule.
The lower tier was in action for Sunday's Big Bash League game but Friday's Test Match will be the first time all three levels are in use, with total capacity set to be around 48,000.
Many facilities within the new stand are also expected to be incomplete for the first major event.
