A parliamentary inquiry has heard the South Australian Government was told Adelaide Oval's planned redevelopment could cost as much as $701 million.

Giving evidence, SANFL executive commissioner Leigh Whicker said the figure was put to the Government's steering committee on April 29.

The SA Government increased its funding contribution for the proposed redevelopment to $535 million on May 25.

The figure of $701 million included a $41 million bridge over the River Torrens, a $50 million car park and a $40 million retractable roof on the tennis centre in Memorial Drive.

Those elements have now been excluded from the project costing.

Mr Whicker told the inquiry football had "grave reservations" before the Oval redevelopment was announced last December that the project could be completed for the $450 million the SA Government planned to commit.

He said the SANFL had concerns before the public announcement was made, but he was unsure whether those concerns were passed on to the Government.

"The SANFL wrote to AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou on the 17th of November 2009 and indicated that the SANFL had severe reservations that the Adelaide Oval project could be delivered for the cost being estimated in the SACA [South Australian Cricket Association] plans," he said.
