ASM Global is believed to be behind a push to double the size of the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, including the addition of a 12,000-seat indoor arena.

The proposal would also see a new 2000-seat grand ballroom enabling the hosting of major banquets, charity balls and televised awards events.

The proposal has been put forward by Harvey Lister, APAC chairman and chief executive of ASM Global – Asia Pacific, according to a report from the Gold Coast Bulletin.

“By far the best site for such a venue (being) centrally located on the Gold Coast close to thousands of hotel rooms, restaurants and bars, Star Casino and Pacific Fair”, Lister said.

ASM Global is also backing the new 18,000-seat Brisbane Live Arena, to be built above the Roma Street rail yards, announced back in December 2019.

The current indoor arena within the Gold Coast venue has a capacity of just over 5,000 and is scheduled to host Volleyball and Weightlifting for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games.

The plans for the expansion includes three exhibition halls measuring in at 7,500 square metres, which means that arena spans about 11,300 square metres. When combined with the floor from the adjoining new arena, there will be a total of 14,000 square metres available for exhibition space.

It has been reported that the expansion project would cost $750 million.
