From ancient times to the modern day, the best sports in the world are played in the best stadiums, and why should it be any different when it comes to Australia? We love to build big, magnificent stadiums for sports where athletes can display their physical prowess to the cheer and adulation of thousands of fans.

In fact, even if you don't love sports per se, you can still appreciate the beauty of a great sports stadium and, let's face it. When you are checking in on the latest WTA tennis odds, you always expect the match you are probably going to bet on to be played in a quality venue. But why do we as societies feel the need to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into building sports stadiums that often don’t seem to pay themselves off over time? There are at least three reasons and they are all very worthwhile when you think about them.

1. Stadiums Are Good for Sports

One way or another, a stadium is an investment. The biggest stadiums in Australia, for example, have paid their value in pure costs and maintenance fees many times over. The thing is people do love to spend money to come and see sporting events, travelling from all over the world.

Tickets generate steady revenue that not only covers maintaining the facilities, but leaves a hefty bit for the government or private investors to pick up. Not least, sports teams benefit a fair bit, too, depending on the type of hiring arrangement they have or who owns the venue.

2. Stadiums Do Help Athletes Excel

This is also true. Stadiums provide the medium that athletes need to truly excel in. They are safe environments where teams can come together and learn how to play better. In tennis, for example, they are places of culture where people's appreciation for the game truly shows.

Tennis players are always close to the audience and that's a humbling as well as an inspiring experience that many players and spectators share and appreciate together.

3. Controlled Environments to Guarantee Fairness

Not least, stadiums are controlled environments making it easy for referees and even sporting bodies to guarantee the fairness of all contests. By going into a sports stadium, you are already subject of close scrutiny that means that spectators, and even bettors, can rest assured the fairness of all contests is closely monitored.

Now, it's not that instances of sports fraud are common, but they do happen. When playing at some of the biggest venues out there, though, athletes have second-thoughts whether they would be willing to sacrifice their good name.

In a way, building stadiums demonstrates that sports are a serious thing to undertake and while an aspect of entertainment, they should be respected and definitely played by the book. Sports fans can be certain that if there is a major stadium involved, the integrity of the game is in good hands.
