A new stadium will be built in Melbourne’s west and Campbelltown Stadium will be redeveloped following confirmation of two new teams entering the A-League over the next two seasons.

The FFA made the announcement at a press conference on Thursday and confirmed that Western Melbourne will join the league for the 2019/20 season and Macarthur South West Sydney will join the following season – 2020/21.

Western Melbourne will play their first two seasons at Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium which has previously hosted some Melbourne Victory home games and attracted decent crowds. Although discussions have been ongoing with the Kardinia Park Trust, no formal agreement is in place as yet and games will need to fit in with other events such as BBL and AFLW matches.

A new 15,000 purpose-built stadium will be built at Tarneit – located 30km west of Melbourne’s CBD. The $150 million facility will be privately-funded and will also feature training fields while residential and commercial development is planned for the surrounding area in the future. Macarthur South West Sydney will play out of Campbelltown Stadium - an existing rectangular venue that has hosted several Western Sydney Wanderers games and is about 40km away from the new Wanderers home - Bankwest Stadium. The venue will be redeveloped into an all-seater stadium over a multi-staged five-year renovation process and the new franchise already has a lease agreement in place. The club also plans to build a training base in greater Liverpool, building a centre of excellence and club house further north from their home stadium.

The option remains open for the bids that missed out to join the A-League, with the FFA keen to expand to at least 14 teams in the future, while a second-division working group will also be formed.

The teams that missed out were: Canberra, Southern Expansion (Sydney), South Melbourne and Team 11 (South-East Melbourne). Read more about the other bidders.
