Metricon Stadium ready for action

Australia's newest stadium, Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast, will host its first match on May 28 in front of a sell-out crowd.

The $140 million transformation of the 25,000-seat Carrara venue, which has taken around two years, is just about complete with only the finishing touches being applied ahead of its official opening.

The AFL's newest side, the Gold Coast Suns, host Geelong on Saturday 28 May and all public ticket sales have been exhausted. Just 1,000 tickets remain on sale for members.

Suns CEO Travis Auld said it was a great result.

"It's the final piece of the puzzle," he said of the stadium opening.

"(The) players have been talking about coming home for some time, and making it a difficult place to play is something we're all looking forward to."

With just some finishing touches in the car park to go, Metricon Stadium will be open to the public on Sunday for a Peoples' Day.

Auld said the 25,000-seat venue was everything the club could have hoped for.

"It looks like, it feels like, the Gold Coast," he said.

"It's different, there's no doubt about that. It's not a standard AFL stadium. For us it's an opportunity to deliver a facility into this community that they have wanted and deserved for some time."

The original stadium opened in 1987 as home of the Brisbane Bears. All that remains is the six light towers which tower above the stadium and have been refurbished ahead of the re-opening.
