After four years of planning and construction, the final touches are being made to Melbourne's new rectangular stadium at Olympic Park.

And the man in charge can't hide his satisfaction.

Grocon executive project manager Steve Richardson has worked on some of Melbourne's biggest developments, but says the bubble stadium, officially named AAMI Park, is a standout.

He says it marries the city's passion for sport with its reputation for bold architecture.

"Look around, you don't get this anywhere in the world," he said.

"It is a fantastic city, there is so much to draw from it. And this is a statement for a generation. It's the diamond in the crown."

Construction started in 2008 and 300 workers have been hard at it to ensure the stadium is ready for fans on May 7.

A rugby league Test between Australia and New Zealand will be the first game on the new turf.

NRL premier Melbourne Storm will play Brisbane two days later. While the first football event will be held on Monday 19th April with a Kevin Muscat testimonial game between Melbourne Victory and the Come Play XI.

"Life goes on hold when you are working on a project like this. You live and breathe it - but that's why you do it. It's what we love doing," Mr Richardson said.
