Plans for a new $156 million baseball and softball stadium at Griffith University’s Logan campus have been outlined, with the proposed venue featuring 4,000 permanent seats and capacity to expand to 10,000 for major events.

The Meadowbrook ballpark is being investigated as a privately funded venue, with Logan seeking a role in the Brisbane 2032 Olympics if baseball and softball are included.

A pre-feasibility study prepared by Torch Advisory Group, working with stadium architects Populous and cost consultancy Quantiv, was scheduled for consideration by a Logan City Council committee on October 7.

The proposal remains at an early stage. The committee report recommends noting the study’s findings, rather than approving construction, while private investment and an Olympic role have yet to be secured.

The stadium would form part of a wider precinct intended to operate throughout the year, with potential uses including international training camps, domestic competition, high-performance programs and non-sporting events.

Accommodation, sports medicine, hospitality and conference facilities have also been identified as opportunities to support the precinct and broaden its income beyond match days.

The latest work follows a memorandum of understanding signed by Logan City Council and Griffith University in December 2025 to explore private investment in a purpose-built baseball and softball stadium.

“While I would love to see baseball and softball played right here in Logan at the 2032 Games, this opportunity is not just about the Olympics,” Mayor Jon Raven said at the time.

The proposed delivery model assumes university land would be made available through a long-term lease, with private-sector ownership and management. Neither council nor Griffith proposes to fund or operate the stadium under that model.

Griffith released an expression of interest in July to test commercial interest in the project.

A potential tenant is the Brisbane Bandits, who have indicated a willingness to relocate if the stadium proceeds. The club currently plays at Viticon Stadium, traditionally known as Holloway Field, in Brisbane.

The study also identifies opportunities to attract spring training camps from Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, alongside the Australian Baseball League.

However, the financial assessment highlights the importance of securing a broader range of users. Its core scenario forecasts an annual operating loss of $900,000, while an upside scenario produces a $200,000 operating surplus. Both scenarios remain in deficit once lifecycle capital replacement costs are included.

Logan’s Olympic ambitions also face competition. Queensland Sports Minister Tim Mander said this week another potential baseball venue had been identified, although its location has not been disclosed.

Baseball Australia is examining alternative options, with the sports’ inclusion in the Brisbane 2032 program and their venue arrangements still unresolved.

Meanwhile, Kayo Stadium at Redcliffe will demonstrate how an existing rectangular venue can accommodate elite softball when it hosts the Women’s Softball World Cup Finals from April 5 to 10, 2027.

The rugby league ground will be converted into an international softball diamond for the eight-nation tournament. Its playing area is considered too small for baseball, highlighting the different venue requirements for the two sports.
