Stage 2 to begin at Members Equity Stadium in February 2006

Chris Egan • Tuesday 12th April 2005

Members Equity Stadium will commence redevelopment on the eastern grandstand during February 2006. The 25 million dollar development will include a video screen, an increase of lighting to 1800 lux, the creation of larger change rooms and the possible replacement of the playing surface.

Jeff Dennis the CEO of Perth Glory which has managerial rights of the stadium explained exclusively to Austadiums.com the change of development date. "The venue will now start redevelopment in February 2006 after the A-League season has finished and will have to be finished by December 2006 in time for the Super 14 team".

Perth Glory now expects the capacity decrease for its games to be minimal if any throughout the redevelopment. "The stand will be done in modules and once one block is completed we will be able to sell tickets to that part of the ground." What will also help is that the stand will be halfway through its construction by the time A-League 2006 comes around.

Dennis stated that the venue would need resurfacing for the new Super 14 side. "We understand the Department of Sport and Recreation are exploring the ideas of redoing the turf...although the cost in doing so would be great".

The lighting capabilities would also be increased for Super 14 standards. "The venue currently meets A-League standards at 1200 lux, but in order to meet Super 14 requirements there is a need to increase lighting to 1800 lux."

Video technology will return to the ground with the club deliberating on two sites. "We are looking at the south west corner due to the sun factor on the north east corner".

Dennis also stated to Austadiums.com that the eastern stand will be extended when Stage 3 is implemented some time in the future.  "The extension of the eastern grandstand around the southern and northern ends, and we would have to look at the destruction of the heritage listed stand on the western side because of the seating gradient...but that would have to be negotiated".
