Arson attack at Ulverstone Football Ground

Austadiums   |  Monday 17th January 2005
The Ulverstone Football Club has been devastated by a suspected arson attack that destroyed a grandstand and caused $500,000 damage.

The middle grandstand at the Ulverstone Recreation Ground was destroyed and another stand and clubrooms were only just saved from the fire that started about 1a.m. yesterday.

It is the latest in several serious arson attacks on the North-West Coast in the past month (see story Page 2).

Police said investigators had not yet determined the cause of the Ulverstone fire but it appeared to have been deliberately lit.

Police doorknocked extensively in the area yesterday. They want to talk to anyone who was in Beach Rd, Victoria St or Water St on Tuesday night.

Ulverstone Football Club coach Max Brown said the club was "dumb struck".

"At 6.45a.m. there were 20 shattered club officials here," Mr Brown said.

"All of us are dumb struck at the stupidity and senseless waste of property."

Tasmania Fire Service investigator Peter Flett said the fire appeared to have started in an AFL Tasmania storage area under the northern part of the grandstand.

Acting Det.-Insp. Darren Hopkins confirmed that the AFL n

Tasmania storage area had been broken into and gear may have been taken.

Police would like to hear of AFL Auskick or AFL Tasmania merchandise being offered for sale.

The council-owned grandstand was insured and will be replaced in some form, but it could take up to a year.
