MCG to hold 100,000

The MCG will have a capacity of 100,000 people after the 430 million dollar upgrade is completed in 2006. Austadiums.com can reveal that the MCC were investigating increasing the capacity before the Commonwealth Games was announced and that the event allowed the MCC to develop sooner than it imagined.

Shane Brown from the MCC stated that the MCG's capacity will be just over 100,000 people, while the redevelopment is being funded by the MCC and the Victorian Government. "The Melbourne Cricket Club is making the most substantial financial contribution to the project ($29million annually for 20 years from 2006/07 to 2026/27). The Victorian Government is providing a one-off $77million grant".

Brown outlined that the MCG can sustain a 100,000 seat stadium into the future and stated that Melbourne's love for sport is a key reason behind the viability of a 100,000 seat venue. "It has done so for 151 years and will continue to do so. Melbourne's reputation as one of the sporting capitals of the world will be enough to keep the MCG busy."

Brown explained the MCG would have been redeveloped with or without the Commonwealth Games being held in Melbourne, but it was this event that allowed the development to be done earlier then imagined. "Plans were already in place for a redevelopment of the northern side of the MCG. Having such a hallmark event at the ground gave the Club a definitive deadline to work towards."

The redevelopment will not only offer a world-class arena, it will also allow for the attraction of more events to the stadium. "The quality of the playing surface and the atmosphere the MCG creates are all things that would contribute to the MCG receiving more events in the future. Being on the world stage for the Commonwealth Games will also give us an exposure which will be a huge advantage."

Brown said that the project was running to budget and schedule and that the capacity will reach just over 100,000 by the completion of the Commonwealth Games in March 2006.
