Plans for the Box Hill City Oval redevelopment

The Box Hill City Oval in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs will receive a $19.1 million redevelopment which will bring the venue up to AFLW standard.

The suburban ground has been the long-time home of VFL club Box Hill Hawks and following the upgrade, is likely to host AFLW matches for Hawthorn which will enter this competition this August. It also hosts Hawks games in the VFLW.

Redevelopment works will include spectator seating for 1500 people and the construction of a new pavilion on the northern side of the ground with training, administration and spectator amenities, while the existing southern pavilion will be refurbished.

Funding for the significant redevelopment was secured after both sides of Government committed funds to the project.

Labor announced in May it would contribute $13.6m if it wins the May 21 federal election, while the Coalition’s promised $7.5m funding if it is re-elected. The Whitehorse Council is committing up to $5.5m for the project.

Box Hill Hawks president Ed Sill said, “It’s well past its prime, and we feel there’s no need to build the greatest stadium, but just a really great sporting stadium for both community and professional standards.”

Mr Sill said user groups would advocate to the state government, the AFL and Cricket Australia for any funding shortfalls depending on the result of the May 21 federal election.

Whitehorse Council Mayor Tina Liu said Box Hill City Oval was an “ageing facility” which needed “significant work”, and the council was proud to have received bipartisan support for the project.

The Hawthorn AFLW team is also expected to play games at its new Kennedy Community Centre in Dingley, however the multi-million-dollar facility is not expected to be completed until at least the end of 2023. The club is yet to announce where the team will play during its inaugural season.
