The WACA maintains cricket, but lose Rugby

The WACA is expected to remain hosts of Test and One Day Internationals in the foreseeable future, says WACA CEO Tony Dodemaide. The venue is servicing a multi-million dollar debt but it will not sell the traditional home of Western Australian cricket. Despite this Dodemaide revealed to austadiums.com that it was unlikely to host Super 14 rugby.

Earlier this year the people of Perth were threatened that test cricket could be moved from our shores, despite this Dodemaide remains confident that Perth will remain the home of cricket in Western Australia. "We will do everything in our power to ensure Perth and Western Australia continues to enjoy a regular diet of international cricket. The WACA ground is the traditional home of Test cricket in WA and is currently the only venue in WA set up to accommodate matches at this level."

While Dodemaide explained that the possibilities of selling was not an option presently.  Despite local media believing that Subiaco would host one day internationals, Dodemaide rejected this as pure heresay. "Despite recent media speculation, we have no plans to move international cricket away from the WACA at this time, nor have we received a proposal from the WAFC to do so."

Despite interest, the WACA is unlikely to gain the services of a proposed Super 14 team. "The WACA would be delighted to host Super 14's rugby if the opportunity arose. This would seem unlikely into the long term given the government announcement of substantial funds to upgrade Members Equity stadium should Perth win the bid."

The search for more events are still on the cards with the WACA noting the success of many concerts held of late and believe that this was an advertisement for the venue.  "We are constantly looking to new opportunities for effective use of the WACA. A series of successful concerts recently demonstrated the versatility of the ground well."

The WACA's future is etched into sporting folklore stated Dodemaide, and will remain a treasure for the people of Perth. "The WACA ground is world famous, and brings substantial notoriety to Perth. We believe it is a Western Australian icon and are doing all we can to retain its position as a world class venue for cricket matches."
