averaging 15k in only expats ain't bad (or plausible, but who needs to go there...), how many people watch aussie rules over there, expat or otherwise?fishmonger wrote:Except that only 1% are American. The same way that many of the Western Force fans are either South African or Kiwis.

Interesting to see that Kevin Sheedy has called for a stadiumNines wrote:Well you are going to have AFL matches there -
preseason games initially , but there are talks about holding
AFL premiership games around the world so Florida could be a contender .
The USAFL National Championships are deffinately going to be held there .
You'll have the Florida tradional 18-a-side teams playing there as well
as the Fort Lauderdale Metro League .
.
similar to Fort lauderdale's to be built in L.A.

So what do you think the future holds for the AFL?
The Australian Government and AFL should invest in a Californian ground. You've got about 40 million people and it will probably take 10 hours to fly there one day. It's nothing. The next Australian type person lives in Vancouver, San Francisco and Los Angeles. And that's where I see gold. 2025 . . we've got to be planning for it now and eventually have a team over there. Why not move the game off-shore? I think they will within five years.
If we can get an icon game like Anzac Day and the Dreamtime game and get $500,000, what's wrong with going overseas and getting a $1 million if it was available. You're only taking two hours off the fans in Australia for one match that might keep the club financially alive.
Already you've got a ground built in Fort Lauderdale. We can really build local footy with 40 teams already in America.

missed this bit
and I'm guessing that's nines, but even if it's eighteens and to stretch the bounds of plausibility let's assume each team is based on a squad of 40, you've got a maximum of 1600 people playing in the whole USA.
whoopty frickin doo in other words.
and otherwise - it's all summed up here:dibo wrote:and still wondering:

Yes , 40 stand alone teams in the USAFL or as we call them clubs .dibo wrote:wow! 40 teams! We can really build local footy with 40 teams already in America.
Each club has a traditional 18-a-side team that competes in mainly interstate leagues , tournaments and the national championships .
Most clubs these days run a Metro league of about 4 to six teams ..
Then there's all the other Australian Football e.g college teams , womens football , junior football , Oztag , and touch football .
If you seriously want to find out how many Americans play Australian Football just go to the site , because they did a census and broke it down into neat groups .

so we're maybe talking 10k max... woo... hooo...
ah, on the usfooty site i find that one of their aims is: To have 10,000 US participants in 10 years.
so they're looking to have enough people to make 2/3 of an MLS crowd playing the game in 10 years. huge sport that.
still missed this bit

Playing the game - participation rates - you know .
Very roughly the particapation rates for Australian Football in Australia are
60k for WA , SA , QLD and NSW , 30k for Tas and lower for NT .
So if you're comparing participation rates O/S then the potential is there . Already you have to Americans playing in the WAFL .
Not long soon that some maybe AFL standard .
That's what grabs the AFL . For me it's just great to see people from other countries playing our great Australian game .
