If TV viewing is a good enough measure of a sport's popularity then it still leaves unaddressed Gyfox's observation that only 4-5m of Australia's 23m people watched the AFL grand final.

Not that i'm in any way agreeing with Nines on this, the numbers Gyfox quoted aren't the number of people that watched, it's the average audience over the length of the telecast.
