I was going to add the qualification "except for not being on the coast" but figured it was kind of obvious!

I take it the Wangaratta comparison wasn't a compliment to Kiama!

Re all those trees lining the entries into towns. Depending on the ages of the trees, you'll probably find most were planted as either WW1 or WW11 'memorial drives'. Ballarat has the longest I know of - 16km's of elms on the old Western Hwy heading west, each with a name plaque of a fallen WW1 digger. Alas, the Ballarat bypass now ... bypasses it.

I've just returned from my little trip, replenishing the wine cellar somewhat. After enjoying sunny days along the Murray, made it over the Alps (a drive thats up there with the Great Ocean Road) without chains - but only just. Here's a shot of the Dinner Plain Pub. The beer garden was quiet, but it was better inside -

Oh crap. I think I've finally caught the travel bug.

Looking at heading to Brisvegas for the Saints/Chess Pieces game.

I haven't been to Brisbane since 1988, so I think it's about time.

I am reviving this thread because I will be in Melbourne next week.

I don't know that there is much more to add. My itinerary is pretty much full with the Neighbours tour, Caulfield Cup and Test Match. I also plan to visit the Royal Exhibition Building as it was the site of our first Parliament. This won't leave much time for socialising but I will make the time and sleep when I get back to Sydney.

I'd like some suggestions for a good restaurant. Nothing too expensive - say $30-$40 a head at the most. I'm looking for a good feed.

Oh and if anyone is interested in meeting up, I'm all for it.

I'll pay you good money to be a suicide bomber.

Oh that's right, the shitty little bus is too povo to get the official accreditation to go into Global Studios.

Jeffles I would go to AFL house, its a great museum.

I also didnt mind going on the ferry to Williamstown, we didn't have time to go out and have a look, but it shows you the Melbourne Port, Docklands, and the city by river.

Well worth the $30 or so.

Thanks for your suggestion Egan. HD, I'll deal with you later.

Do the locals have any suggestions? Jesus H Christ, normally we can't shut you Vics up. Maybe I am going about it the wrong way. I need to display the superiority complex and the competitive edge that draws Melburnians to austadiums.

"Sydney's restaurants sh*t all over Melbourne's. In Sydney, there are loads of great places where you can get a real good feed for less than $40. This is non-existent in Melbourne..."

Prove me wrong!

A bakery in Queen Victoria St...and the cheap big breakfasts in the city where classic.

Lacks a true bakery culture, but has a very good hot breakfast culture that creates a real buzz, although when you bump into Basil Zempilas it kind of ruins your morning. (I don't think I could listen to Basil when he begins commentating on Channel 7 for football next year)

But the people you meet on the street and the looks you get when you tell them you are from Perth.

Well that is worth more then the plane ticket alone

Apparently Lygon St has some awesome italian restaurants, me and Matt are going to them in December.

A good city needs to be judged on the amount of Bakeries in the CBD.

Perth has psycho amounts, and I only found one in Melbourne.

Thus lacks Bakery Culture
