Re: AFL 2011
Looks like their ground won't be ready until late May - they're even playing a home game in Blacktown in April.
One of their few national FTA games is against Geelong in Geelong. That's not going to be a good look.

Read more: http://www.smh.com.au/afl/afl-news/gian ... z1c2fa9atVAFL chief operating officer Gillon McLachlan said the most challenging aspect about doing the season draw - and those for the next few years - was establishing the GWS Giants as drawcards and balancing their opposition as they stepped to the higher level of competition.
"We've been open and realistic about the size of that challenge, the balance of the teams we're putting up there," McLachlan said.
"You could put Collingwood, Carlton, all the big teams up there but at the moment they're the toughest teams to play against in a football sense.
"So trying to have big-ticket teams up there, but not having (GWS) play the best teams twice is obviously a challenge."
The only top eight team from last season to play the Giants twice in 2012 will be Sydney, because of the derby aspect.
to paraphrase: "we want to rig the draw so that they have easy games but also so they get more crowd-pulling fixtures. Unfortunately we can't do both"
Love it. It's so utterly shameless that you have to applaud it.

But if all teams played each other twice the world would end. Just look at Europe.Simmo79 wrote:Love it. It's so utterly shameless that you have to applaud it.

Re: AFL 2011
If they played twice there'd be a waiting list a mile long for knee replacements. Draw lots for who plays who twice

Any clever person worked out if the AFL has scheduled the Suns against Titans next year?

Re: AFL 2011
Well why did the league trolls criticize the AFL for scheduling the Suns against the Titans? Guess we will have to see if the NRL schedule against the Suns in 2012........didn't help Titans crowds this year!

Re: AFL 2011
It's not even the League that shcedules the matches, it's Channel Nein and Fox Sports who do the picking, which determines the timeslot.
I don't think any code wants head to head because it forces people to choose the other over their own one. . Many will deny its existence but there is a cross-over of fans, whether in Sydney, the Gold Coast, Canberra, or any other city. And it's not just NRL-AFL.

I agree 100% with you, Jeffles. Tho with the new AFL broadcasting deal we now have the Saty twilight game which will go head-to-head with NRL. Will be interesting to see how it goes.......tho I think AFL will not have the quality games to challenge NRL on pay tv.

Re: AFL 2011
why not? Surely they're about equal. The worst you could say for the AFL is that it has a 9th best match, which the NRL doesn't. That's nothing.

Re: AFL 2011
As I understand, the top NRL games are on pay tv, whereas the top AFL games are on FTA. This has been the reason why NRL has trumped AFL on pay tv. I stand to be corrected when the 2012 TV schedules appear.

Re: AFL 2011
The reason NRL games 'trump' AFL games on pay TV is primarily due to there almost always being multiple AFL games on multiple stations. The last (only) time the AFL had a game exclusively on Pay TV in prime time was the first Q-Clash (that name gets shittier over time) and it was one of the highest rating programs of all time on Australian pay TV. It's nothing to do with the top NRL games being on pay as that's not true - Channel 9 pick the best 2 games every week for Friday nights.
It also doesn't help that AFL games go for an hour longer, so audiences need to watch longer to get the same average.
What's going to be interesting is that there is a pretty big incentive to get Fox this year - all games live, including the much maligned Friday nights where 7 delayed games here in Perth by up to 4 hours. Whether that will drive up subscriptions amongst AFL fans time will tell.

channel nine get the first picks for game of the round. arguably, since they make the picks as the season goes the better games should be on FTA.nobleoz wrote:As I understand, the top NRL games are on pay tv, whereas the top AFL games are on FTA. Re: AFL 2011
Other than GWS draw (which is inconsequential because you could say Collingwood getting to play them twice, is unfair other top 8 sides). I like how they have evened out the travel commitments for Melbourne teams, so that the poorer teams dont do all the travelling.
