AFL's push on the Oval will help the round-ball game

IT IS news that comes with two small but delicious ironies. The new, state of the art, sports stadium that Adelaide has craved for years was actually sealed during a meeting in Melbourne last month.

And the compromise that made it possible - driven and brokered by the AFL and its chief executive Andrew Demetriou - also delivered a much-needed boost to the nation's bid for the soccer World Cup and with it a boost for football's biggest competitor.

It's a miracle but don't tell egan he'll choke on humble pie .

It wouldn't be quite as significant here because the WACA is in an ordinary location. Adelaide Oval is in a perfect location (well, as much as anything in Adelaide can be in a perfect location).

Other than that, cricket really doesn't bring anything more to the table other than the odd ashes test and a couple of one dayers or 20/20 games. Nothing more than rugby union anyway.

Football will be bringing in the money & the spectators to this new stadium - so it should have control. But let's wait until after the election next year!

Nobleoz if you read the article it says that the facility will be governed by an independent authority with the head of the SANFL and head of SACA on the board.

I heard that the head of SACA would be Chairman of the Board with the SANFL providing the CEO. There would be 4 from both SACA and SANFL on the Board.

So I take it that each stakeholder will be free to make the most of his time share parcel .

No it means that Cricket doesn't get shunted off the ground for pre-season AFL matches that they do at other grounds such as Etihad...

Cricket at Etihad? Not too many games in Feb/March. If Adelaide Oval is controlled by an "independent authority" then SANFL will not have control during the football season. We would be back to pre-1974. Football Park was built so that football could have control of its own facility, & we football supporters have benefited. Why would you trade that for a city stadium with less parking & less seating....& dubious benefits for SANFL members?

Actually, what is the plan for SANFL members? I've always thought that the idea of SANFL members is pretty much obsolete - if you want to watch the Crows or Power, then buy a bloody Crows or Power membership.

If the SANFL end up selling off a lot of the land at West Lakes and keeping the proceeds, then I reckon that should provide a pretty decent income stream to them for a long time.

This has not been made clear ,whether cricket and football time share or the independent authority has everyday controll . Because of the history of the SANFL you'd think they would have learned and insisted on a time share arrangement .

I wouldn't bulldoze Westlakes not untill after the WC .

Actually on that point . The construction of AO allows football to run uninterrupted during construction . That's why Perth needs to do something similar .

Sunday Mail has published details of SANFL requirements, incl control from March 1st & completely "clean" stadium. There is no way SACA will agree to this!

Another interesting comment in the Sunday Mail report comes from Rann's adviser, Jill Bottrall:

"The government will help where it can, but it's not really our responsibility." Back-peddling already!

Doesn't seem to be a problem for the Eagles and Dockers every week .
