QEII Stadium to be demolished?

Well one of NZ's commonwealth games venues looks like being no more. Luckily I have already visited it. Be interesting what sort of plans they come up with in that precinct from the city to AMI.

$150m rebuild? QE2's replacement doesn't need to be rebuilt quite as big. An athletics venue with 25,000 seats is unrealistic. That said, a precinct in the SE of the city sounds nice.
I'll have to visit before it's demolished because it has hosted RL Tests.

Well Hadlee Stand at AMI looks like being demolished as well as QEII Stadium.
What sort of population realistically can Christchurch maintain into the future?

Stacks. Look at Japan! May have to toughen the building code but they'll be fine.

I'm not so sure.
They were forecasting on the news today that another whopper will rock the Canterbury region within the next 12 months.

Look at their fishing boats raiding our waters. 125 million is too many.Jeffles wrote:Stacks. Look at Japan! May have to toughen the building code but they'll be fine.

i've now seen a few news reports that suggest ami stadium might be uninsurable. they can't guarantee when it'll reopen, if at all.

I thought it would be difficult to insure a stadium...IanRitchie wrote:i've now seen a few news reports that suggest ami stadium might be uninsurable. they can't guarantee when it'll reopen, if at all.
What happens to sport in Christchurch? They have to build a brand new stadium?

Don't know where those news reports are getting their info from, but this quote from the latest press release from the Stadium's owner -IanRitchie wrote:i've now seen a few news reports that suggest ami stadium might be uninsurable. they can't guarantee when it'll reopen, if at all.
"AMI Stadium is expected to reopen in stages throughout 2012" - would indicate a positive future for the ground.
Assuming there aren't any more quakes on the way of course...

Re: QEII Stadium to be demolished?
Yesterday, the Canterbury Rugby Union (CRU) all but ruled out Rugby Park as an alternate venue.
He said "commercially it would not solve" the union's financial problems because it held less than 8000 fans and would need an expensive renovation to host Super Rugby games.
CRU chief executive Hamish Riach did not want to comment on speculation Rugby League Park may be spruced up and pressed into action.
"We want to play the majority of our home games in Christchurch next year and we are considering all our options to make that happen," he said.
At AMI Stadium the Deans and Paul Kelly stands subsided in the shakes and will be off limits for much of next year, and possibly 2013, while remedial work takes place.

How Rugby League Park did not collapse is hilarious, but could easily be spruced up to hold 20,000...particularly with the use of temporary stands at one end of the ground.

Ironically, one of Rugby League Park's grandstands had been condemned before the earthquake, yet the building survived the tremors.
This is the part where Roy Masters says it goes to show how resilient the game of rugby league is surviving all manner of natural disasters and opression.
