Australain Football stadiums overseas

Post by Nines »

This weekend sees an incredible list of firsts as Australian Football in North American shows further signs of maturity. Besides Canada and the United States men's squads again doing battle for the 49th Parallel Cup (and playing a further exhibition match the following day), the two day event will feature the debut of the two countries' national womens and juniors squads. The tournament is being staged as part of the annual BC Footy Cup in Vancouver (British Columbia, Canada), and will include a visit from Japan's Tsunami squad joining in with the Victoria Lions (Can) in the club competition featuring Seattle (US) combined with Portland (US), Vancouver (Can), Burnaby (Can) and Alberta (Can). The tournament will take place at UBC's 3,500 seat Thunderbird Stadium, perhaps the premier venue for Aussie Rules in North America.

can you describe a 3500 capacity ground as a 'premier venue' for anything, anywhere?

In an historic day for Canadian and International football, the Canadian Northwind beat the US Revolution 45 to 32 on Saturday August 4. The 49th Parallel Cup game was played on the spectacular Thunderbird Stadium on the UBC Campus in Vancouver BC, in perfect conditions for footy. This was the Northwind's first ever victory in International football over the Revolution and the Canadian leadership was excited to have the win during a football carnival that saw around 2500 people come through the Thunderbird Stadium gates to watch non-stop footy over the two days.

A permanent home for USFooty and Australian Football in the United States may currently be under construction in the City of Lauderhill, Florida. Broward County is currently constructing a stadium with 5,000 covered seats for cricket (and football) at a cost of $30m as part of a sporting complex that will include three full size cricket (football) grounds. According to the Ft Lauderdale's Fighting Squids' Joshua Goodstein, the County plans to place goal posts on the field and is working towards hosting the 2009 USFooty Nationals. If the renderings are anything to go by this will be a beautiful world class facility that will have the ability to host major events including USFooty Nationals, AFL games and possibly the 2012 AFL International Cup
On the Friday before East vs West game, Broward County hosted a tour by USFooty officials, who by all accounts, were very impressed. The scheduled open date is mid-December 2007, and according to Goodstein, both the Broward County Parks System and USFooty continue to work together in order to bring footy events to this state of the art facility.

The mayor of Lauderhill, Richard Kaplan, unsuccessfully lobbied the West Indies to have Lauderhill host games during the current World Cup. Despite that failure, Kaplan has forged ahead with a somewhat paired down stadium (5,000 seats and a "hill" instead of the original 30,000 seats) and convinced Broward County to transform the land into the premier stadium for cricket and footy in the United States. Groundbreaking took place in 2005 and the project was slowed by Hurricane Wilma, but now County and City officials are confident that the facility would be ready by December.

The Central Broward Regional Park as the facility is currently known will sport a main cricket/footy oval with a 5,000 seat stand and a grassed outer with capacity for 20,000. This field will be 180m in length. Next to the main oval will be two more cricket/footy ovals that will double as four soccer pitches. Each of these ovals will be 165m in length. All three ovals will be under lights. If more US counties would follow Broward County's lead the US would not lack for footy fields. The stadium itself harks back to traditional cricket stadiums with covered bleaches extending either side of the main building, the "Field House", a glassed in viewing area. No doubt a very comfortable place for watching the willow striking leather on a warm Florida day.

Its better than some of the New Zealand AFL (sic) scores i see, where the dominant team in the competition racks up 30, 40 points in a game.

OC Bombers Defeat San Diego at Staples Center
By Corey

It’s been home to some of the most storied franchises in sports. From the Lakers, to the Clippers and the Kings, legends have graced its floor. Last Friday night Staples Center saw two more legendary teams do battle as the Orange County Bombers faced off against the San Diego Lions.

The game, which was played after an LA Avengers arena football game, was modified to fit the small field. Goals were set up with six and three pointers, while 7 players per team were on the field. The result was a fast paced and hard hitting affair.

Although the game was only an exhibition, it was obvious from the first bounce that both sides were taking it very seriously. San Diego would lead for most of the match, as their veteran players were able to control a lot of the ball. The fourth quarter, however, saw an inspired comeback by the Bombers. The result had OC pulling out a hard fought come from behind win. OC 75, SD 73.

Thanks very much to both clubs who helped make the event a success. Judging by the spectator’s noise, all in attendance got more than their money’s worth. No doubt this warm up to the regular season will only add to the adrenaline when these two square off as 18-a-side teams.
