Time to go over some old territory, but this time we've got some visual stimulus!

From memory, one of the old debates was about whether Telstra Stadium or the MCG was more suitable for rugby/soccer.

In this instance, we can look at the proximity of the spectators in the upper tiers to the pitch.

Certainly a very good comparison. Very suprised about the high difference between the MCG and Telstra. It also goes back heaps more than than the G. Where would you rather be sitting for a Soccer match? (assuming you're sitting on the wing. Up the very top of Telstra or MCG?

It just shows if Telstra Stadium was exclusively an oval for cricket and football...over 125,000 seated easily with that stand around the ground if not more...it seems double the size of the MCG.

Id prefer MCG over Telstra for soccer simply due to larger capacity.

The oval shape of the MCG, as opposed to the parallel flanks of Telstra, creates the illusion that the action at the MCG is taking place in another postcode.

However, if you were at the very top of the MCG you'd be a few rows closer to the middle of the pitch than you would at the top of Telstra.

At least at Telstra Stadium you don't have to look at acres of grass either side on the playing field!

My choice... Telstra Stadium.

My choice - MCG - Telstra only holds a height higher than the new MCG Northernstand for a fraction of it's length on either side, while the new Northern Stand will hold it's height for over half of the MCG's Perimeter...

My choice - Stadium Australia.

An oval stadium should not be considered for a WCQ unless it is considerably larger in capacity than every other stadium in the country.

16,500 and perhaps only 10,000-13,000 in several years time.

Along the length of the stadium it wouldn't drop far below the height of the northern stand, if at all, would it?

An interesting comparison would be to compare the cross-sections of various grandstands and determine which would be the largest capacity if an entire stadium were of that design. Or, to put it another way, if the cross-section was only one seat wide, which one would have the most seats?

My guess, from biggest to smallest, would be:

1. Waverley Park Members Stand
2. Telstra Stadium Northern and Southern Stands (77 rows on the top level during the Olympics)
3. Telstra Stadium at the highest point on the wings
4. MCG Olympic Stand (original design, before the boxes were installed)
5. MCG Ponsford Stand
6. MCG New Northern Stand
7. MCG Great Southern Stand
8. MCG Old Southern Stand
9. Football Park Nothern Stand
10. Football Park Members Stand
11. Subiaco Three-level stand
12. Suncop Stadium new stands
13. Waverley Park outer
14. Telstra Dome
15. Subiaco Two-level stands
16. Gabba
17. Football Park outer

That's a good comparison to make. Now we've just to work out how many rows each stadium has.

Approx Seating capacities at Telstra Stadium:

Lower Bowl : 46,000
Middle Levels/Boxes : 14,000
Upper Deck: 23,000

Interesting to see that the lower deck only at Telstra exceeds the capacity of the SCG

Not sure on MCG,but my guess.....

Lower Level: 30,000
Middle Level/Boxes : 15,000
Upper Deck: 55,000

Anyone got figures?
