Even if a footy side is losing 2 million bucks a year, if they are government owned this isn't such a big deal. 2 million dollars on something which provides entertainment for upwards of 30,000 people 10 times a year is money very well spent. I've seen more money get blown on stupid fireworks displays.

I disagree yob. Governments are becoming more economically minded. They are now looking for stronger financial management within their organisations. While they will tolerate such losses for now, hey wouldn't be too happy, especially considering that competitiors in the market (other AFL clubs) can make profits in the same business.
