There is a bit more detail on the proposed use of the ground in the article linked below. Unsurprisingly the venue would be used as Phoenix's training base as well as over summer for its associated team in the ASB Premiership and Youth Premiership and also probably the Capital team in the ASB W-League that already plays out of Petone. Winter use would be for club rugby with the possibility of the Lions or the Hurricanes also playing some games there.

It's always confused me how the capital of a rugby mad nation, thought it made sense to build an oval stadium when the Basin reserve was a perfectly pleasant place to watch and play cricket already?

Wellington didn't need a venue strategy the day before Petone was announced.gyfox wrote:Surprise, surprise. Westpac Stadium want to keep Phoenix at their venue.

The Stadium's Master Plan has been developed to improve game day experience but how much difference does that make for the less than 10k Phoenix fans who have to experience the extremely poor atmosphere of a 34.5k venue that is the wrong shape?
At least the stadium's CEO is talking about the possibility of retro-fitting moveable stands into the venue but that doesn't overcome the issue of the venue being too big for the club.
If there were a venue strategy the Caketin wouldn't have been built, and of the group of 3 with Basin Reserve and Petone it would be the obvious candidate for deletion. Unless they do the Adelaide thing and just claim it's to host the Commonwealth Games - without hosting the Commonwealth Games. Or bidding for them...

If Shaun Harmon wants to keep the Phoenix at the Caketin he should get his head out of the clouds and concentrate on the basics, such as providing a playing surface that doesn't endanger the health and safety of players.

Lower Hutt council is going to be amalgamated with Wellington City Council and have all this money to spend before this happens and sees Petone as a great option.
Lot's of ratepayer issues though, mostly NIMBY's and hipsters.
