Asian Cup Stadiums 2015

Post by Scott »

AAMI Park - 7 games including Opening, QF
Canberra - 7 games including QF
Suncorp - 7 games including QF
Hunter - 4 games including SF, 3rd place playoff
ANZ - 7 games including QF, SF, Final

Hunter is the big winner, probably taking advantage of the cup being held in January and minimising the travel at the business end of tournament. Possibly it'll be converted to all seater for the games?

Excellent news the rectangular AAMI Park was selected over Etihad and MCG in Melbourne. SFS would have been a better choice than ANZ for the Sydney fixtures, as attendances will be less than 40k except if Socceroos make the Final.

There are also 2 training venues in each city except Sydney which has the referees training venue as well.

Do you know what requirements there are for the pitch surface for the training venues?

At this stage I would say they would settle for grass considering that they are okay with hunter stadiums turtleback.

I'm surprised Perth Oval did not get even 2 games for the Asian Cup

Apparently the State govts of WA & SA are blind to the exposure Soccer can bring to their cities so they didn't engage with the FFA to underwrite hosting rights. Adelaide would only have had the new AdOval to offer, I imagine Hindmarsh would be considered too small by AFC.

I look forward to seeing the Asian tourist boom that will hit Canberra and Newcastle post 2015.

Events hosted by countries tend to give very little, if any exposure to any particular city outside of the ones already known. Events hosted by cities are a different story - Olympics, World Athletics championships, that sort of thing.

I imagine it would be similar to Australians flocking to Asian cities following previously held Asian cups.... What are you worried about Rob...China loves Western Australia... Maybe not Perth though.

Behind the facade of international exposure, public investment in big events is a rather selfish, introverted exercise. In this case it's a far easier sell for Canberra's pubes than Adelaide's because all we have here is the Faders and 4 home games for Great-you're Worse-than Shitty.

FOOTBALL Federation Australia have ramped up talks with the NSW government to bring the world's biggest football clubs to Sydney next year, with English Premier League giants Chelsea and Arsenal, Italy's Juventus and Spanish champions Barcelona heading the hit-list.

A stunning $16 million return from Manchester United's seven days in Sydney last week has triggered the NSW government's enthusiasm

Big difference between big European clubs and Asian competition. Asian football has very little traction here. The best Asian clubs play us in legitimate competition (ACL) in front of empty stadiums. Also in many parts of South East Asia the heavy hitting premier league clubs dwarf the home team AND the national side. Malaysia and Thailand are coloured red and blue, ManU, Chelsea, Liverpool absolutely everywhere.

And that's only talking about the East Asian bloc. The rest of the confederation has no traction anywhere.

Want an example? A few weeks ago we played the Malaysian national side in Canberra. Not we as in Australia, we as in my club. And I don't think the 0 turnout was because it was a school night. They were sh*t too.

Then why was the Olympic football tournament a success?? Because it was an 'event' The Asian Cup could have been marketed the same way as the Rugby World Cup in 2003. I don't think there'd be many folks who would give a fig about Romania v Tonga in the Rugger, but linking purchase of tickets to pool games to availability for the big prize(Socceroos tickets) would be the smart way to go. People like to go to 'events' Piggy-backing on sporting/cultural 'events' to drive tourism and drive up hotel occupancy is a no-brainer as the Victorian govt know very well, now the NSW govt wants in on the act. NSW is broke..SA& WA are not. twas short-sighted not to bid for hosting rights IMO.
