VU Whitten Oval
The VU Whitten Oval is located in the heart of Footscray in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne. White it is no longer used as an official AFL venue, it does play host to the Western Bulldogs AFLW and VFL teams, as well as the training and administration base for the club. As well as being the home of the Bulldogs, the Whitten Oval was also the home of the Fitzroy Football Club for a number of years. In total, the ground hosted 880 AFL/VFL matches, including two finals.
During its AFL days, the Whitten Oval (then known as the Western Oval) held around 25,000 but has since been redeveloped with capacity now around 10,000. New lights suitable for night matches were installed in mid-2016 and more recently, a video scoreboard. The EJ Whitten Grandstand remains, as does the administration building, and a modern training facility, with a grass hill surrounding the rest of the ground. The venue is officially known as the VU Whitten Oval due to a naming-rights agreement with Victoria University.
