Whitten Oval
The Whitten Oval, commercially known as the Mission Whitten Oval, is located in the heart of Footscray in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne. White it is no longer used as an official AFL venue, it does play host to the Western Bulldogs AFLW and VFL teams, as well as the training and administration base for the club. As well as being the home of the Bulldogs, the Whitten Oval was also the home of the Fitzroy Football Club for a number of years. In total, the ground hosted 880 AFL/VFL matches, including two finals.
During its AFL days, the Whitten Oval (then known as the Western Oval) held around 25,000 but has since been redeveloped with the capacity reduced to approximately 7,000. The final stage of its redevelopment was completed in mid 2024, including a brand new EJ Whitten Stand, which has been completely rebuilt to include 920 undercover red, white and blue seats, club museum, an 82-seat theatrette with a 10 square-metre video board, merchandise shop and administration facilities. New broadcast quality lights were installed as well as a video scoreboard.
The venue is officially known as the Mission Whitten Oval as of February 2024, and previously the VU Whitten Oval due to a naming-rights agreement with Victoria University.
