Middle Park Stadium

Closed/Former Venue

Middle Park Stadium was the former home ground of the South Melbourne Soccer Club (Hellas), since its establishment back in 1959. The ground played host to over 1,000 memorable matches, including over 450 National Soccer League encounters. South Melbourne's last home game at Middle Park was on Sunday, 23 October 1994 where it recorded a fairy-tale 4-1 victory over arch-rivals, Heidelberg United.

Also known as Hellas Stadium and Oval No. 18, the old ground included one main grandstand which stretched along one side of the pitch while the rest of the ground was surrounded by terracing, with a maximum capacity of around 18,000.

The ground was bulldozed to make way for the Albert Park Grand Prix Track which hosts the Australian F1 Grand Prix. South Melbourne Soccer Club now plays their home games at the nearby Lakeside Stadium (then known as Bob Jane Stadium).
