Located on Townsville's Waterfront, the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre was constructed in 1993 to meet the growing demand for a convention venue in the tropics. The venue is jointly owned by the Townsville City Council, Thuringowa City Council and Breakwater Island Trust and has been managed by Breakwater Island Trust since its opening in February 1993. Such has been the success of the Centre, in 1997 its capacity was increased by 1,100 seats and all function areas refurbished to what is now a facility of truly international standard.
The Centre is well known for its flexibility: hosting a Davis Cup Tie one week and an international convention the next. The Centre's interior whilst stylish maintains a warm tropical character.
Former NBL team Townsville Crocodiles previously called the venue home. Basketball will return to the centre, hosting matches for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
