Parramatta Stadium
Parramatta Stadium was demolished in 2017 to make way for the new Western Sydney Stadium. The venue was officially known as Pirtek Stadium at the time of its closure and is located on the banks of the Parramatta River, adjacent to the historic Parramatta Park. The Stadium was formerly home to NRL club Parramatta Eels and A-League club Western Sydney Wanderers. The Stadium grew from the ashes of Cumberland Oval, after the Oval Grandstand was burned to the ground by Parramatta Eels supporters', when the Eels won their first premiership in 1981. The new Parramatta Stadium was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on March 5, 1986.
Pirtek Stadium for a long time has been a key sporting venue in Sydney. It was used for most major concerts and certain sporting events before the Sydney Football Stadium was built. The Stadium has two identical grandstands on either side with seating for 16,000 and seating at either end for a further 4,000. The two hills which used to be situated behind the goals at each end were replaced by seating in early 2003 bringing the total capacity of the stadium from 27,000 down to 20,000. Pirtek purchased the naming rights to Parramatta Stadium in October 2013 in a five-year deal.
