Old Sydney Football Stadium

The old Sydney Football Stadium (commercially known as Allianz Stadium when it closed), was a rectangular stadium situated next to the Sydney Cricket Ground. It hosted its last event September 2018 and the stadium was demolished in 2019. The venue is being replaced by a brand new world-class Sydney Football Stadium, currently under construction on the site of the old stadium and is expected to open in September 2022.

The Sydney Football Stadium opened in 1988 to much acclaim for its wave-like structure. However the roof can cause issues when it rains with it not covering the majority of seating on level 1. From its opening, the stadium was the home of Rugby League, however Grand Final's were transferred to the larger Olympic Stadium at Homebush when it opened in 1999.

The stadium plays host to Rugby League, Union, Football and concerts. Capital works back in 2006 increased the capacity of the old stadium from 42,000 to 45,500, of which 44,000 was seated. The majority of seating is located on the two flanks. Two video screens are location within the venue, one at either end. The playing arena measures 140m x 79m.

The stadium played host to Football during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Other big events held at the stadium include Football World Cup Qualifiers, NRL Grand Finals and International Rugby Union fixtures. The record crowd for a sporting event is 43,967 for the Australia v Argentina World Cup Qualifier in 1993, while the largest Rugby League crowd is 42,482 for the 1997 ARL Grand Final between Manly & Newcastle. The largest concert crowd is 52,838 for Robbie Williams in 2006.

Allianz Australia signed a 10-year naming rights agreement with the Sydney Football Stadium in February 2012. The venue had one other name when Aussie Home Loans held the rights between early-2002 and mid-2007 with the venue known as Aussie Stadium. It was announced in March 2022 the the new Sydney Football Stadium will also be known as Allianz Stadium.
