Mars Stadium
Mars Stadium is a 11,000-capacity outdoor sports venue located in the Victorian regional city of Ballarat, in the suburb of Wendouree. Stage one of the venue's redevelopment was completed in late June 2017 at a cost of $15m. The ground was transformed with construction of a new 5,000-seat grandstand, 50 sq/m video scoreboard, new lighting, as well as the resurfacing & realignment of the playing surface, which is now the same dimensions as Marvel Stadium. The North Ballarat Sports Club is located at the ground which features tables overlooking the playing arena.
Mars Stadium was originally known as the Northern Oval and prior to its current naming-rights deal, was called Eureka Stadium and Austar Arena. It was the home ground of former-VFL club North Ballarat Roosters and hosted its first AFL match for premiership points in August 2017. It continues to host two Western Bulldogs AFL home games each year. A-League club Western United also hosts some matches at the venue until their new stadium opens, while it also hosted a Super Rugby fixture for the first time in 2020.
A further $6.6 million in upgrades were made to Mars Stadium in 2020/21, following an announcement in 2019 , featuring new entrances and ticket boxes, covered areas, concrete terrace on the outer hill, permanent bathrooms and increased accessible seating in the Western and Eastern stands to be built. In 2022, it was announced Victoria will host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with Mars Stadium to host the athletics events. As a result, the stadium will receive another upgrade, with the potential of its capacity boosted to 20,000 (with an extra 10,000 of temporary seating to increase the capacity to 30,000 for the Games).
