Fremantle Oval
Fremantle Oval (officially known as Fremantle Community Bank Oval) located in the heart of the Fremantle CBD and has been a centrepiece of the fabric of sport in the Port City since 1900. With an enviable location, Fremantle Oval has played home to the South Fremantle Football Club since 1900 and served as the training and administration base of the Fremantle Dockers since 1995. The ground previously had a capacity of around 17,500, but can now accommodate around 10,000 spectators.
Fremantle Oval combines the new with the old and the plain old weird. As a result of realigning the ground in 2001, the field has now been shortened and the car park extended. In front of the car park, the historic 'old' grandstand as it's known, dominates the north eastern wing of the ground.
The Fremantle Football Club also previously called the ground home from when they entered the AFL. They constructed their headquarters at the southern end of the ground, which was completed in 2000. The club has since relocated to new headquarters.
The South Fremantle Members Area holds approximately 750 people. While terracing surrounds the rest of the ground with vegetation covering the northern extremities of the embankment.
In 2004, new facilities came into affect which included the opening of the George Grljusich Media Box and the upgrading of the existing lighting system, in turn allowing for a higher quality lighting system to raise the standard of night football at the ground for both spectators and players.
While other grounds have remained stagnant in the development of facilities, Fremantle Oval has continued to transform throughout history, with epic encounters between South and East Fremantle, while the Dockers have also played many a scratch match at the ground.
Fremantle Oval in many ways is the very essence of the Fremantle History, it has grown as the city has grown and today is an enviable venue with a magnitude of charm, but with the facilities to match.
