Top 5 Stadiums Outside of Australia

Joel Smith • Tuesday 21st April 2020

Grading the best sports stadiums in the world - outside of Australia - is a subjective matter and there are so many amazing stadiums to choose from, making it extremely challenging to narrow it down to five.

That said, we’re giving it a crack and we’ll throw in a few honorable mentions at the end that could easily take the place of any of the Top 5 on our list.

We’ve based our top five on a range of factors, not only taking into account their design, but also their history, popularity and game-day atmosphere.

So, here we go...

#5. Fenway Park, Boston, USA

This stadium is iconic in the United States and home of the Boston Red Sox. Built back in 1912, it has the vibe of America’s favorite pastime written into its iron and wood. Not only is its design reminiscent of the industrial age, but it’s also a downright amazing atmosphere. The Green Monster out in left field – the famed 37-foot-tall and 231-foot-wide wall designed to keep home runs from visiting teams limited to ground-roll doubles, is a significant part of baseball history.

Fenway Park

#4. The Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro

Another beautiful stadium that has hosted some incredible events with some of the worlds most passionate fans in attendance. This stadium is an eye-catcher, managing to stand out among one of the most beautiful skylines in the world. The venue has hosted two World Cup’s and an Olympics. The first iteration of the Maracanã saw nearly 200,000 people in attendance for the World Cup group-stage match between Brazil and Uruguay. Truly an amazing place for football fans.

Maracana

#3. Allianz Arena, Bavaria, Germany

Allianz Arena is the home venue of FC Bayern Munich. One of the great things about this stadium is its luminescent quality, with the stadium’s exterior LED lighting able to light up like none other, even capable of animations during events such as goals.

All in all, it’s a beautiful stadium with 105 meters by 60 meters of Desso GrassMaster hybrid turf. The 75,000 fans are much closer to the pitch than they were at Allianz’s predecessor stadium, the Olympiastadion. On top of this, there are 106 premium executive suites, making Allianz hands down, one of the top stadiums in the world.

#2. Mercedes-Benz Superdome, Atlanta, USA

Home to the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, the MLS’ Atlanta United FC, and the Sugar Bowl. This 1.6 billion dollar project turned out to be one of the world’s coolest stadiums. It’s comparable in size and capacity to Allianz - for NFL games it holds 75,000, but had a record attendance of 78,384 spectators watching the Peach Bowl (college football).

One of the key features is the upper concourse and its 100-yard Club. It’s a gathering and concession area that stretch the length of the field, with TVs showing other games (for fantasy football buffs) and several bars. This magnificent stadium in Atlanta, Georgia is scheduled to host the 2024 Super Bowl, let’s hope they improve their odds for 2024 because at the moment the Atlanta Falcons are +4000 to win the Super Bowl in 2021.

Mercedes-Benz Superdome

#1. Wembley Stadium, London, England

While the stadium has been upgraded, Wembley takes the top spot on our list because it’s just so iconic. Not just for English football, but so often when you hear bands talking about the best concert or venue they’ve ever played, Wembley is often a venue mentioned.

Built for just under 800 million GBP (about 1.2 billion accounting for inflation today), Wembly can hold 90,000 passionate fans. The English Men’s National Team calls it home and major matches like the FA Cup Final are held there. Wembly was the first stadium in the UK to play host to an NFL game – now games are also played at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Other massive events held at this iconic stadium were Joshua vs. Klitschko, the Wembley Cup, and Live Aid in 1985, before the remodel.
