MCG claims bragging rights in Stadium Awards
The MCG has taken out the inaugural Austadiums Awards, voted by fans as Australia’s Best Stadium for 2018, while also winning a further two of the minor categories.
As well as the major award, Australia’s largest stadium also took out Best AFL Stadium and Best Major Stadium. AAMI Park was the other big winner, also taking out three awards, with the two Melbourne stadiums accounting for six of the eight categories.
Australia’s newest stadium, Optus Stadium, was the MCG’s closest competitor, even leading the way at stages, however a groundswell of support for the Melbourne Cricket Ground late-on confirmed its number one spot.
Melbourne’s AAMI Park was voted number one for Best NRL Stadium, Best A-League Stadium and Best Mid-Sized Stadium. ANZ Stadium and Suncorp Stadium also featured prominently for the best NRL stadium while Nib Stadium (now known as HBF Park) was runner-up in the A-League.
The Victorian dominance continued with Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium voted Best Regional Stadium, with Metricon Stadium, the recently-opened Bendigo Stadium and Mars Stadium not far behind.
The most closely contested award was for Best Indoor Arena, with Perth’s RAC Arena winning ahead of Marvel Stadium and Rod Laver Arena.
