Comfort over capacity as SCG takes shape
The SCG's $186 million redevelopment is due for completion in just over a year and officials are promising a world-class experience for fans in the new facility.
The first images of how the new facility will look on the inside have been released as work steps up a gear ahead of the 2012/13 Ashes Series between Australia and England.
Demolition of the Noble, Messenger and Bradman stands commenced early this year and took most of the AFL season however work on the new stand is now well underway.
The new grandstand will provide much-needed state-of-the-art facilities for the historic ground including roof-top terrace, sports bar with its own micro-brewery, 700 person dining room, corporate areas and a large entry atrium.
SCG Trust chief executive Jamie Barkley said he wanted patrons to enjoy the same experience as fans in the US, where the new Yankee Stadium has set a benchmark.
"My experience in travelling to the US over the last couple of years has highlighted the need to engage the fans," Mr Barkley said.
"The new facilities are designed to draw fans out from their lounge rooms so they will come to the SCG and enjoy the complete match-day experience.
"Putting fans first is the priority - it has never been about capacity. It's about comfort and convenience."
The new grandstand will be open to SCG members and the general public and will increase the ground's capacity from 46,000 to 48,000 and will also feature a new 272 square metre LED video screen - the largest of any Australian stadium.
