The AFL Grand Final at the MCG

The 2022 AFL Grand Final returns to its traditional home this year with a sold-out MCG to host the big event. Here’s your ultimate guide to watch and stream the game live, on every device including on your mobile.

After being held away from Melbourne for the past two years due to Covid (2020 – Gabba, Brisbane; and 2021 – Optus Stadium, Perth) the biggest game on the AFL calendar returns to the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2022.

The match between Geelong and the Sydney Swans will kick-off at the traditional 2:30pm timeslot (AEST) on Saturday, September 24. It’s the first time the two teams have met in a Grand Final. The pre-match entertainment, headlined by Robbie Williams with Delta Goodrem, will commence at 1:40pm. See below for the full run sheet.

Around 100,000 spectators are expected for the 2022 AFL Grand Final with all tickets sold-out for the game. The last time the GF was played at the MCG, 100,014 fans were on hand to see Richmond defeat GWS Giants. A Covid-restricted crowd of 29,707 saw the 2020 GF at the Gabba, while a sold-out Optus Stadium crowd of 61,118 attended last year’s Grand Final.

If you’re not attending the game this year, here’s how you can watch the action live.

How to watch the Grand Final on TV

The 2022 AFL Grand Final will be shown live and exclusive on Channel 7 in Australia. Pre-game coverage begins at 9:00am (AEST), with the countdown from 10:30am and the pre-game show from midday. You can tune in to 7HD for high-definition coverage on channel 70 or channel 7/71 for standard-definition through your TV antenna. If you’re watching through Foxtel, tune in to channel 107 for standard definition or 207 for high definition – although your antenna must be plugged into your set-top-box if you’re on satellite. If you usually watch channel 7 through the network’s official app, 7plus, see below for some important information.

Can I watch the AFL Grand Final on 7+?

You can stream the Grand Final live on the 7plus App, but only on selected TV’s or set-top-boxes. Importantly, you cannot watch the game through the 7 App on your mobile phone or tablet, as is currently the case for all AFL matches. This is due to broadcast restrictions put in place by the AFL. You can watch the game through the app on the following devices: Telstra TV, Samsung Tizen (2016+), Fetch TV, Apple TV, PlayStation 4 & 5, Android TV, Google TV, Amazon Firestick, LG TV. Note: You cannot use Chromecast or AirPlay from your mobile/tablet to watch the Grand Final and you cannot watch a replay of the game on the 7+ app.

Is the AFL Grand Final on Foxtel?

No, the Grand Final will not be shown live on Fox Footy due to the Pay TV provider not having the rights to broadcast the game direct. You will need to tune in to Channel 7 to watch the match (see above for details). Fox Footy on channel 504 will show a replay of the Grand Final immediately after the final siren.

Is the Grand Final on Kayo?

While Kayo Sports live streamed every game of the 2022 premiership season and finals series, the Foxtel-owned platform does not have broadcast rights to live stream the AFL Grand Final, meaning you cannot live stream it on the popular service. You will however be able to watch the game on-demand when Fox Footy broadcasts a replay of the game, available on all devices including mobile phones and tablets.

Stream Grand Final on the AFL App?

Fans in Australia can stream the 2022 AFL Grand Final on their phone or other mobile devices through the AFL Live Official app, with coverage starting at 1:30pm AEST.
