Three sites have been identified for the possible construction of a new $60 million indoor boutique stadium on the Gold Coast.

There have long been calls from the sports and business community to build a centrally-located boutique stadium for events that don’t require the 27,400-capacity Cbus Super Stadium or 22,500-capacity Metricon Stadium.

A new venue would have a capacity of between 8,000 and 12,000 and Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate says it is central to the city’s COVID-19 recovery.

“I am looking forward to the results of this finding and to make this project come to fruition and it will need industry input to ensure it is financially viable,” Mr Tate told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

“Once we can make it viable to investors then it will have a good chance of going ahead but there is excitement for this project in the city and it is all about planning and getting ready for the post-COVID world with investment.”

Cr Tate said the project would require a public-private partnership to become a reality.

The three sites earmarked for a new boutique stadium are located in Parkwood, Southport and Miami. The Miami depot is considered a frontrunner given its proximity to Pizzey Park which is about to undergo a $20 million makeover.

It’s believed the venue would have a retractable roof and be able to host rectangular sports including football and rugby league/union as well as basketball and large-scale conventions.

Council would contribute city-owned land and road infrastructure while the private operator would be given a long-term lease and fund the construction of the complex. Council would retain the right to use the venue for city events on a certain number of days each year.

It was revealed in December 2019 that the State Government had held early talks with Live Nation, one of the world’s biggest music promoters to build the stadium on the Coast.
