Moorabbin Oval’s playing surface will receive a multi-million-dollar upgrade, as construction of the Danny Frawley Centre and grandstand continues at the Saints’ headquarters.

The resurfacing of the ground means the St Kilda AFLW team will be forced to play the majority of their home games elsewhere, with the new season now due to commence on January 6.

The club is also currently finalising an alternative training ground for the AFL team, with work set to commence in early September and be completed in mid-February 2022.

The renovation of the ground, commercially known as RSEA Park, will include an overhaul of the ground’s current turf, drainage and irrigation system and footpaths.

The work has been made possible by funding from the Federal Government, Victorian Government, Kingston City Council and the AFL.

St Kilda CEO Matt Finnis said the upgrade was an important investment in the key asset of the revitalised RSEA Park, which now hosts training and matches for AFL, AFLW, talent pathways and community football.

“We’re thrilled to commence this turf redevelopment which is long overdue,” Finnis said.

“In the last three years, RSEA Park has been transformed with a state-of-the-art training and administration facility for male and female teams for St Kilda, the Sandringham Dragons, SFNL and SMJFL and as a result, the usage demands on the oval have increased significantly.

“Given the timing and extent of the works, there will be some impact to public access, community football and our elite-level programs until early in the new year.”

The work on the playing surface coincides with the ongoing construction of the new $16 million Danny Frawley Centre for Health & Wellbeing at the Linton Street ground.

The centre features a 1000-seat grandstand, providing much-needed match-day facilities for the traditional home of the Saints, which now hosts AFLW matches and occasional pre-season AFL games.

Building upon and extending St Kilda's stage 2 development of RSEA Park, the centre will ultimately incorporate a 25m lap pool, hydrotherapy pool and rehabilitation gym, as well as a multi-purpose movement space capable of delivering wellbeing programs to schools and community groups of up to 250 participants.

Dedicated mental health facilities will include consulting suites for service providers, shared work areas for program development and research, a community education room for prevention and training programs as well as casual meeting spaces for facility users. The facility is due for completion in early 2022.
