Collingwood V Carlton - since this photo, 1.5 more bays of the top tier have been completed, and 2 more middle tier bays. There's also now support beams in for the extra tier of the members reserve.

Not long to go until the grand final - can the lower level and middle tier bay concrete be in place all the way to the Olympic stand, on time?

It's not their intention to have all the concrete done on bottom and middle levels to the Olympic Stand by GF time.

If you use the photo taken at the Carlton vs Coll game as your guide, all the seats on the bottom level will be used for the GF (obviously the dark green ones will be all properly installed), with four more bays of seats installed on the second level (through to where the gap appears), and those two upper levels with green seats also in action. That is all that is required to meet the 80k minimum, but the MCC have announced that attendance could be above that (which means more seating on the bottom level (maybe a bay or two). It depends on what has been built above it though (for safety reasons).

So their running ahead of schedule which is good.

The thing that has been good about the redevelopment is that 60,000 last week between Essendon and Melbourne looked nearly full, while when it gets to 100,000 a 60,000 seat crowd will not look nearly as good.

I think we'll have more than 80,000 for two reasons, this year:-
  1. The net gain of people that fit into the Ponsford area of the new stand over the old Ponsford stand would be considerable.
  2. The old members Pavillion and small chunk of the Olympic stand missing aren't a huge loss to the capacity.
I'm certain they'll have over 80k :)

Are you sure on that first point of the new Ponsford seating more than the old?

I would estimate that the old Ponsford would have had a higher capacity. The lower deck of the new stand might be slightly bigger, but the middle deck is much, much smaller and the top deck about the same - the top is much higher than the old but the angle is steeper. I counted 38 rows in the top deck of the new Ponsford, compared to 37 in the top deck of the old.

Overall, the space that was occupied by the old Ponsford accommodated more than that same space now occupied by the new one.

BenD, don't forget that they used to cram people into the Ponsford as well. No leg room, and hardly any room between seats, as it was all bench seating, not individual plastic seating. So, the capacity is quite possibly less in the new Ponsford secton. The stand will make up ground where the pavilion was, and where that gap between Pavilion and Olympic Stand used to be (Annexe Bar area).

I have a question, don't know if anyone can answer it. Why are there always large areas of empty seating behind the goals in the new stand? I've noticed it for a few months now, there always seems to be empty seats there. Last night for example, the whole bottom tier of the GSS and Olympic Stand was jam packed, yet hardly anyone in the new stands botttom tier. Anyone suggest why? :?

When it's raining, MCC members don't like to get wet...

The Melbourne sporting public just isn't as passionate about footy as they want us to believe :D

Oh yob, you and your passion. In Melbourne, mate, we don't cut down goal posts...we actually save them for the footy matches.

Melbourne is passionate.
