Well, the English have 7 years to pick up their act. I suppose the Greeks did in the end.

I guess I just wish it would go to a city/nation that has never had the Olympics. The closest was probably Madrid. Even a South African city as they are hosting a competition extremely competitive for the "Largest sporting event" tag in 2010. Am I right to say Africa has never hosted a games?

I would have gone for New York if Atlanta never received the games.
Is it possible to stage the world's two biggest sporting events within two years? They're also in the running for the 2011 RWC.

Rugby World Cup the second biggest sporting event in the world? :? Try the FIFA World Cup.

He meant FIFA World Cup was second. He added them maybe hosting the 2011 Rugby.

I think it is possible to host sporting events within 2 years. It isn't like the IOC would choose depending on where FIFA played their game.

Anyway, Olympics is confined to one city (mainly) but the FIFA world cup is confined to the whole country/ies. The only Olympic sporet that covers multiple cities is Soccer. A good warm up.

Isn’t the 2014 FIFA World Cup going to South America/Brazil? Either way I’m sure they can handle it but whether countries should be allowed to host events so close to each other to be fair to other countries I think is another matter.

They should get the 2011 Rugby World Cup, it will be a good practice run for events hosting before the Olympics, but I’d think hosting the English Premier League + Champions League matches is as big an event anyway, maybe. Geez it will be a busy country!

THe 80k version looks OK. I just hope because the capacity will be reduced by some 55k, they dont go with the flimsy stands with V gaps in them, ala QE2 in brisvagas '82. But of course too keep costs down it would make sense to demolish some concrete & a heap of steel than shite loads of concrete & a bit of steel.

Are the stadium photo's bona fide though ? Often you will get rough plans & by the time it all eventuates it will look slightly or even completely different.

Probably. They want to share it around the continents.

2002 - Asia
2006 - Europe
2010 - Africa
2014 - ????

South America would make sense for 2014.

The 80k one looks alright I reckon. Besides the roof. That thing is grotesque.

i'd say 2014 will go back to Europe... FIFA will push for Sth America to host 2018 - these days, their bid couldn't compete with one from the like of Europe or even one of the Gulf states or Australia on merit...

e.g.
62 Sth America
66 Europe
70 Sth America
74 Europe
78 Sth America
82 Europe
86 Central America
90 Europe
94 Nth America
98 Europe
02 Asia
06 Europe
10 Africa
14 Europe surely
18 ???

No. FIFA are changing and trying to spread the World Cup around the confederations. Maybe minus Oceania.

Yeah they're going to formalise a rotation system between the confederations.

I reckon China would be ahead of Australia in the Asian pecking order, but probably no-one else.
