^ Penrith's operating budget is a fraction of GWS. If it had the marketing budget of GWS it would be selling out every game, if GWS had Penrith's resources, they'd be getting 1000 a week...

The NRL crowds in Sydney are consistant with the crowds they have been getting for the past 5 years.
If anything the crowds are higher

So Penrith have 40+ years on GWS and they've used all those decades to build their crowds up to something that is barely more than the Giants are getting in their second year.

Rugby league heartland at its best.

Not all people that live near Penrith support the Penrith Panthers

There are 5 NRL clubs that play in Western Sydney and annual attendance is around 800k which is about 10 times what GWS are drawing a home. Penrith are only a small part of League following in the west. You have to add the fans of clubs in the eastern half of the city who have moved out there for cheaper housing. As an example 40% of Souths members live in Western Sydney.

And this is what ALF doesn't understand.
The region has had a century of League, Union and sokkah.
The region fails to continually attract 20 k's per match to the sports that it loves.
A blow in sport that it despises won't be bought by marketing.
GWS will not succeed in western Sydney.

I dunno, they're onto something with cornering the xenophobic redneck crowd.

They can market their games with SMS texts, Cronulla style.

yeah, but look at their crowds. that's not viable enough either.

unless you're saying there are more xenophobic rednecks in western Sydney, in which case AFL will smash it.

two teams in relatively poor form (or record poor form, for the tigers) against out of state opposition on a pissing wet friday night.

i'd say, given the nrl averages, that wasn't a disaster.
