The Hobart 2020 Olympic Bid is running a design competition for proposed stadiums and arenas, see the media release below and for more information and how to enter please visit http://www.hobart2020.org/designcompetition
For immediate release Monday 21st June 2010

HOBART 2020 OLYMPIC BID ANNOUNCES NATIONWIDE DESIGN COMPETITON

THE HOBART 2020 OLYMPIC BID AND THE HOBART ORGANISING COMMITTEE FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES (HOCOG) HAVE ANNOUNCED AN EXCITING COMPETITION FOR SOME OF AUSTRALIA’S FUTURE ARCHITECTS AND ARTISTS TO BE PART OF ITS BID TO BRING THE 32ND SUMMER OLYMPIAD TO THE CITY OF HOBART.

Architect students as well as talented drawers, artists and designers are being asked to come up with concept images and designs for stadiums and arenas for the 2020 Olympic Bid. These designs will be put to an international online vote, with the winning images becoming the final designs for the stadiums which will represent Hobart to the world for their bid for the Olympic Games.

The winners will also get the opportunity to see their designs off the page, with Tasmanian company ViewBuild making available its award winning 3D modelling software for budding architects to produce stadium ideas, with ViewBuild working with the winning entrants to fully realise their ideas.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for some of our future architects and artists to show off their designing skills to the world and have their work become the face of an Olympic Bid,” HOCOG president Ben Waterworth said.

“By having this opportunity out there, we hope to scope some national talent for some images that we think will make our already unique bid even more unique, and create faces to our future iconic stadiums and arenas that will house the greatest athletes in the world should our bid be successful to host the Olympics in ten years time.”

“These stadiums and arenas will also put Hobart on the international stage as having some of the most iconic venues in the world to host everything from international sporting events to the worlds leading bands, this giving these future architects and artists of Australia a massive stepping stone in showing the world what they can do.”

Architects and artists are asked to draw up designs for four venues, The Ponting Dome, Regina Arena, The David Boon Sports Centre and the focal point of the games: The David Foster Stadium. These four venues will serve as the main hosting venues for the Olympic Sports, with the David Foster Stadium being the main venue for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, as well as the Athletics and Football finals.

The competition commences immediately with the closing date being Wednesday the 14th of July. All drawings and designs will then be put to an international online vote through the Hobart 2020 Website, Facebook page and Twitter service, with the winners being declared at the conclusion of this. Further details of the competition can be found by visiting http://www.hobart2020.org/designcompetition and further details on ViewBuild can be found at http://www.viewbuild.com.au

Australian Olympic Committee media spokesman Mike Tancred told AAP it was up to the Tasmanian government to make an official bid before it could proceed any further.

The proposed main stadium for the Hobart 2020 Olympic Bid is named after Tasmanian sporting icon David Foster, and will be the centrepiece of the bid. It will host the opening and closing ceremonies and provide Hobart and Tasmania with a main stadium which can be used to host various other sporting events and other major events.

The stadium is planned to seat between 50,000 to 100,000 people with the design incorporating everything that Tasmania is known for - our beautiful mountainous terrain, our stunning flora and fauna and the unique beauty that cannot be experienced anywhere else in the world. And by using futuristic photoluminescent 'SMART' materials that allow a stunning glow at night time, could become one of Australia’s and the World’s most iconic sporting venues. It is nothing short of spectacular and designed by Lindy Carolyn Hayter

With the design for David Foster Stadium now public, it is hoped that over the coming weeks that HOCOG will release its designs for its other venues that it too hopes will bring spectacular arenas to the most beautiful place on earth. Better make sure it's got retractable seats for a rectangular configuration, otherwise this forum will go into meltdown.

This would be the first time a stadium has been constructed that has a capacity higher than the population of the city it is in, yeah?

Moving forward indeed...

This thing fails as a hoax because peiople don't believe it, it fails as a joke because it's not that funny and it fails as a serious bid because it's absurd.

Spam at its best.
