If TV viewing is a good enough measure of a sport's popularity then it still leaves unaddressed Gyfox's observation that only 4-5m of Australia's 23m people watched the AFL grand final.

On my way to Dan murphys I noticed that Rugby league was being played at Erko oval with a good crowd too.....

Problem resolved. Situation adverted.

Not that i'm in any way agreeing with Nines on this, the numbers Gyfox quoted aren't the number of people that watched, it's the average audience over the length of the telecast. The figure that says how many people watched is audience reach, which isn't generally published.

If it is by TV viewing then we are a nation of horse racing fanatics.....but that's not true either.

Where's you acceptance that people can follow a sport without actually attending ?
What sort of daft response is this? It is a given that for every sport people can follow it without attending games. That does nothing to support your proposition that "most Australians prefer Australian football".
