Rob - sometimes enthusiasm for the "world game" leads to ignorance about Australia's own football history

Good to see the mighty Hawks are the reigning champions! ;) And stuff calling them Champions of Australia, lets be like the Americans and call them World Champions!

I like the idea, but I don't like the idea of calling it the Champions League. I believe that name is reserved for the best of the best. This comp is best of the second-best.

We have a black arm band view of that particular history.

Not that impressive by Hawthorn - they've won the same number as West Adelaide.

You think so? No Federal funds to help replace Subi, no Federal funds to help with Adelaide Oval, no Federal funds to fully develop AAMI Stadium, no Federal funds to fully develop Gold Coast Stadium. Sports Minister was on the radio this morning saying all Federal funding for stadiums was tied to a successful World Cup bid.

The AFL could have saved themselves the worry about getting their knickers all twisted about the world cup - seems it didn't make a difference

I agree - AFL had plenty to gain from a successful bid.

Which is why I never totally embraced it.

I think NRL had much more than AFL to lose if we got WC. All those rectangular pitches taken over by soccer for 2+ months. NRL consigned to the suburbs. AFL would still have been drawing big crowds - & getting PR, probably.

Velcome to the dark side. Muwahahahhaaahah.
Only SA and WA to fall into the line my pretties.

AFL had much more to gain from the stadium then the NRL.

the nrl would have gained a white elephant in blacktown and not much else. improvements to newcastle that were going to happen anyway, and a bunch of temporary seats in townsville. not a big legacy there.
