Anfield Redevelopment

Post by Simmo79 »

Liverpool have announced that their future will be at Anfield, not a new stadium in Stanley Park or a proposed shared stadium with Everton. They've acquired the last of the neighbouring terrace houses behind the Main Stand and can now push on with a major redevelopment.

The Masterplan

The proposed stadium expansion plans include detailed proposals for the Main Stand and outline proposals for an expansion of the Anfield Road Stand.

The images show how Anfield will look when the expansion of both stands is complete.

In the design of the scheme our primary objectives are:

To increase capacity. The current capacity of Anfield is around 45,500. Our design for the expansion of the Main Stand would enable us to increase capacity to circa 54,000; and our design for the Anfield Road stand would enable us to further increase total capacity to circa 58,800.

Improve fan experience. As well as providing access to more tickets, fans will benefit from improved concourse areas in the Main Stand. Those attending the match as hospitality guests will enjoy a wider range of offerings. All of our fans will be able to maximise their trip to Anfield by using the extensive public space around the Stadium that has been designed for use as a Fan Zone.

Operational efficiency. New back of house facilities for players and staff will replace current facilities which are outdated. The redevelopment will allow us to make much needed improvements to the operational efficiency of the stadium that should benefit all visitors to Anfield.

Space outside the stadium. There will be significant areas of open public space created around the stadium. These areas have been designed to accommodate a Fan Zone and to regenerate the area immediately surrounding the stadium as well as housing the Hillsborough Memorial. In addition there will be a podium that will improve access into the stadium and create further benefits for fans, such as an additional Club retail store.
There's nothing available yet for what they plan to do with the Anfield Rd End (the one with the away fans) but they have released renders of what they want to do with the Main Stand.
The proposals for the Main Stand extend seating capacity of this stand to approximately 20,500 seats.

Fans and visitors will benefit from:

Increased access to tickets
Modernised concourses
More hospitality offers
Improved catering choices
Improved disabled access and more wheelchair viewing positions
Attractive open public space

The new Main Stand will comprise three tiers with the existing lower tier re-profiled to accommodate a widened player tunnel, new team benches, media tribune, premium seating and wheelchair viewing positions.

A double height podium will provide access to the Main Stand. Beneath the podium there will be an additional Club retail store, ticket office and the relocated Hillsborough Memorial.

The Anfield Rd stand is going to be redone in similar fashion. Given that they'll both be similar to / bigger than the Centenary Rd stand, the Kop is going to look overwhelmed.

But the Anfield Rd end is the most hemmed in by a mile. Well, metre. Source?

Oh dear, so they're just closing Anfield Rd and building on it.

That's disappointing. The joy of architecture to me is responding to the constraints with a designed solution. To just blow the constraint away Stadium WA style just makes it all meh

On the comments about the Kop being overpowered, if the Main Rd Stand repeats around Anfield Rd end, the ground may end up looking a bit St James Park ish

The thing I'd like to see most at Anfield is some safe-standing space on the Kop

HFSG are unwilling to even countenance the idea, in spite of all sensible arguments in favour and the fact that there are modern and *very* safe options.

Other grounds may get safe standing, Anfield never.

At some point HFSG might see sense (most likely when other clubs have implemented it).

They say sitting is always safer than standing; logically they'd have to therefore support far more heavy handed stewards enforcing the sit down rule. Can't see that going down well on the Kop.

And all the other grounds

Quite often when we're watching the EPL in our hosue I'll say to the other half "notice something about the crowd? look closer." And the response is always "holy sh*t, the whole stadium is standing!"

CoMS and Stadium of Light are usually good examples.

Were the law to change, the PL club most likely to jump straight in is Villa - they've shown a lot of interest in safe standing. If the Holte End is standing and loud, other clubs will jump in. I can see Arsenal, City, Stoke, Fulham all following suit, and then bang - it's everywhere.

How does the capacity change when going from seated to safe standing terrace? I'd only see Fulham going for it if they don't lose any capacity. They're a bean counting mob there, doing CBAs on adding 1,000 seats per off season. They wouldn't want to lose a year's work.

That said, they're working on a new solution to the capacity problem this year... losing...

Capacity goes up. For every seated ticket, you can sell somewhere around 1.7 to 1.8 standing tickets.

For Liverpool, where the Kop currently holds 12,390, they could add 8,673 to 9,912 seats.
